Unbundling of Marketplaces: Part 1

The unbundling of Craigslist and eBay are two of the biggest trends of the last decade.

Craigslist, while a powerful posting board, wasn't suited for the buying and selling experience of many of the products and services being listed on the site.

Sub-boards within Craigslist turned into marketplaces that focused on a set of consumers. Some examples of marketplaces born out of Craigslist are ones for job listings, car sales, home rentals, and the like.

A similar unbundling fell upon eBay as marketplaces sprung up to build better buying experiences around a specific niche customer. Some that we've seen are StockX, Vinted, and Poshmark.

As ecommerce continues to grow, the opportunity for these niche marketplaces to become successful grows as well. They now have enough of a customer base to be a standalone business.
